Harvard College Organization for Open Philosophy

Purpose Statement

The Harvard College Organization for Open Philosophy is an undergraduate association that seeks to advance undergraduate knowledge and appreciation of philosophy by creating a welcoming environment for collaboration among students from all backgrounds and areas of intellectual interest. We envision a future for philosophy\x{e2}\x{80}\x{94}for its subject matter, its methodology, and its place in the College\x{e2}\x{80}\x{94}that welcomes every voice, values every contribution and fosters a broadly engaging and inclusive culture. HOOP aims to embody this vision in the present by offering settings for students of varying levels of philosophical experience to practice the art of philosophical debate constructively and respectfully, with an emphasis on engaging with subjects and approaches outside the traditional philosophical canon. Thoughtful questions and substantive critiques are central to our vision of philosophy and are encouraged in all programming sponsored by the organization. Discrimination, prejudice, hostility and intimidation of any form are antithetical to our vision of philosophy and will not be tolerated in any programming sponsored by the organization.
